Donell Jones - Where I Wanna Be - This was the Donell Jones album where everyone got introduced to him. With the smash hit You Know Whats Up which actually was one the songs i didnt like on the album, but none the less, that song is what made him popular. You could really tell by listening to this album once, that Mr. Jones really was feeling this album. He doesnt really push the limits at all, and basically sticks to mid to slow jam songs. He doesnt really even attempt to do a club song at all on this album. This album is just a real chill & relaxed album. He doesnt test the waters very much, he just sticks to what he knows hes good at. But that works for him and against him to. He is almost to chill on this record. I am not saying by any means that this isnt a good album, but thats what kept this album from being a classic like Life Goes On. But he does have some really good slow jams on this album like the accoustic guitar laid back song This Luv, its just a real chill song. And then he does a couple of baby makers in the form of a more mid tempo sexy song with It s Alright which is a classic Donell track. And then he does his first REAL baby maker with I Wanna Luv U, its just a real chill love song. Overall this is a great album, from a great artist.Grade:B+
Where I Wanna Be - This is an excellent sophomore effort from Mr. Jones. I really didn t pay this singer any attention till the release of the YOU KNOW THAT I LOVE YOU from his 3rd album! This album is very well put together, the songs flow beautifully and show off his soulful vocal style. As I listened to this album I kept waiting for a bad track to pop up but it never did - I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the first 5 tracks and when an album starts off THAT good, I take my hat off to Donell, the other songwriters & the producers. Donell shows off his songwriting skills on more than a few tracks which creates a lot of cohesion - the album definitely has a storyline of love, loss & pain from a male perspective without getting too vulgar (this is what I also appreciated about his debut). I gave the album 5 stars as a classic of what modern r&b SHOULD strive for - this is a terrific heartfelt album - even the quicker tempo songs make you pay attention to the lyrics! I don t judge artists by their sales but damn, this boy SHOULD BE BLOWN UP TO USHER or R KELLY level just based on the excellence of this album. Donell is a consistent singer/songwriter who just keeps getting better & better.I can t recommend getting this album enough - if you love r&b, it should be in your collection!
